What’s the link? All had terrible tournaments recently, yes, but the main link is their association with Nike. Federer takes home $13 million a year, Woods $40 million a year, Rooney £1 million a year. As The Guardian points out this week, it has been a disastrous 12 months for the promotional department at Nike. With tough times ahead, perhaps even the inflated sports marketing business bubble is set to feel the pinch – you need look no further than London’s number one club, The Arsenal, to see how competitive and seemingly scarce the corporate money in sports is becoming.

Will be interesting to see how marketers like Octagon react and what other budgets they start chasing.

But in the meantime, just enjoy the wonderful ad Nike did which will forever be remembered for its World Cup flops.
