Is appointing Sir Philip Green to review government spending a PR stunt? Certainly he has a great track record on cutting costs and making money but even Sir Philip can hardly delve too deeply into the costs of the Ministry of Justice, for example, in only six weeks. If it is a PR stunt, it hardly got off to a great start given Sir Philip’s tetchy interview on the Today programme, which delved into his tax status (and that of his Monaco-based wife). 

However Sir Philip seems bullet proof on PR. For every journalist he monsters, there’s another who loves him. Hanging around with supermodels like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell gives him a certain glamour. And as the War Crimes trial in the Hague showed, a bit of celebrity can liven up any debate.
