A few of their favourite things

During the second week of 2012 the media spent the majority of their time reporting on three of their favourite topics – ladies, retail and themselves.

Women in the media
Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman…especially if you’re involved in politics. Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher hit our cinema screens this week and has divided opinion, similar to the eponymous Iron Lady. Wales and the North East won’t watch it and the Telegraph and Cameron have blasted the film for focusing on Maggie’s weaknesses rather than her strengths.

Meanwhile Michelle Obama has started a PR offensive appearing on This Morning Show on CBS where she hit out at claims she is an ‘angry black woman’ and joining Twitter as the 2012 US election campaign really ramps up.

Women in politics always have the media’s full attention and column inches, but they seem to trigger a far more emotive response than their male counterparts, which they don’t have any control over.

Retailers in the media
While the BRC announced a boost in UK sales over Christmas this week, Sainsbury’s Greggs and Superdrug toasted their success but Tesco were disappointed, with “what went wrong” attracting over 300 comments on the Telegraph. David Gray of Planet Retail put the figures down to a change in a shopping behaviours and the death of the fortnightly ‘big shop’.

If retailers don’t want to look out of touch, they need to stop slashing prices and start understanding the bigger implications of tightening budgets – a shift in shopping behaviour, not just the amount we’re spending.

Media in the media
Giving evidence at the Leveson inquiry, Richard Desmond wasn’t keen to make friends with the Daily Mail. The owner of the Daily Express and Star also didn’t have time for the ‘useless’ PCC, calling the Inquiry itself ‘probably the worst thing that's happened to newspapers in my lifetime’.

Maybe he has a case of the January blues, or perhaps he’s spot on. One thing is for certain - surely all this hack-bashing has to stop soon?

Tweet of the week: @Wendi_Deng Will the real Wendi Deng please stand up? #weareallwendideng
