Well they do say there’s an app for just about anything.
Could the EpicWin app, due for release in the next few weeks, be the key to making us all happier, more productive individuals? Described as a ‘playful productivity app’, the basic idea is that it provides motivation to do the things we’re all so good at putting off, like going to the gym or doing the ironing.
You create your to-do list and every time you complete a task and tick it off the list you earn points. The points are categorised under five attributes: strength, stamina, intellect, spirit and sociable. The stronger your personal attributes, the further you can move forward on the ‘quest map’, picking up treasures as you go.
This a great example of how to incentivise ‘good’ behaviour - a well established strategy, for example insurance companies offering cheaper health insurance if you exercise regularly or retailers offering loyalty cards. What’s also interesting about this though is that it takes every day, mundane tasks and turns them into opportunities to develop valuable personal (and inter-personal) skills.
The word ‘nudge’ has been somewhat over-used recently, but I’d say this is an initiative Mr Cameron would be proud of. Clever stuff.
You can see a preview of the app here: http://www.epicwinapp.com/.
Right, I’m off to do the ironing…
